How to integrate the HoloBuilder plug-in for Revit

1 Installing the Plug-In

Once you have downloaded the plug-in, double-click on the installer icon to set up the plug-in. Make sure to close Revit on your computer before proceeding with the installation. The right plug-in for your Revit version can be downloaded here.

1) In the installer, select the right destination where the plug-in should be installed. In order to correctly integrate the plug-in into Revit, it is important to install it in the destination …\Revit\Addins\2018 of your Revit application. Click on ‘Next’ and then Install’ to start the installation.

2) If your Revit application is already opened on your PC, you need to close it before continuing with the installation. In the installer, select ‘Automatically close the application’ if you do not have to save any progress in Revit. Select ‘Do not close the applications’ to stop the installation and close Revit properly. However, when selecting this option, the installation will be canceled and you need to restart it.



When the installation was completed, click on ‘Finish‘ to close the installer. Restart Revit and switch to the Add-Ins tab to access the HoloBuilder plug-in. Find also a short video on how to install the HoloBuilder plug-in for Revit

2 Create a HoloBuilder tour within Revit

Create a 3D tour of a 3D model capturing automatically all rooms defined in the model as 360° renderings. The renderings will be placed on a sheet according to their location with waypoints. Open your 3D model to get started.

2.1 Switch to the sheet view

In the model, open the 2D floor plan of a floor to place the waypoints for the 360° renderings of your 3D model more easily. These 2D floor plans will also be used in the HoloBuilder project as sheets.

2.2 Place 360 views

Select the tab ‘Add-Ins’ at the top and click the button ‘Place new 360 View’. In the dialog box adjust the settings to fit your needs:

  • ‘Automatically resize crop-box of active view to include all rooms’

All newly added 360 views will be listed in the Project Browser side panel under 3D Views of the selected plan.

  • ‘Adjust visual style of active sheet to Hidden Line (Improved Performance)’

Render your selected sheet to a more basic Wireframe view only displaying the lines on white background. The floor view will be only a basic representation of the walls etc.

  • Set the camera height

Determine the camera height for all newly created 360 views. The height is defined in meters. By default, the height is set to 1.60 m as this is the average eye level.

Add views options

Add 360 views for all the places you want 360 images to be generated of. If you already have 360 views in the project, they will be exported to HoloBuilder as well. You can add a 360 view for each room of your project automatically or you place the 360 views manually yourself:

Click the corresponding button to proceed as best suited:

  • ‘Start manual placement (Press ESC to exit)’

Select this option to determine each location for each individual 360 view manually. On the sheet, you will be able to select each position you want to be captured as 360 view. Each newly captured 360 view will be listed directly in the Project Browser panel below the selected sheet under 3D Views if the option ‘Automatically resize crop-box of active view to include all rooms’ is selected. Leave the editing mode by hitting ‘ESC’.

Right-click the image in the Project Browser panel to view the location of the camera on the floor plan. Select ‘Show camera’ from the menu. The location of the 360 view in the 3D model will be marked with a pink camera icon.

This option is quite useful to add extra viewpoints as 360 views to the automatically created 360 views.

  • Automatically place views in all rooms’

When selecting this option, the plug-in will create a 360 view for each defined room on the sheet. The views will be created automatically and placed on the sheet accordingly. Once all views have been created, you can find the list in the Project Browser panel. All 360 views of a sheet are listed below the sheet under 3D Views.

Depending on the number of rooms, your sheet hat, this process can take a while to create the 360 views.

2.3 Edit views

Views are limited in editing but there are a few options for you to adjust them already in Revit:

  • Rename views by right-clicking the image in the Project Browser panel and selecting ‘Rename…’
  • Add additional views with manual placement.
  • Remove 360 views so that they won’t be exported to the Holo


2.4 Export as HoloBuilder project

Once you have placed all 360 views in your 3D model, you can export it as 360° tour to HoloBuilder. Click the ‘Start Holo Generation’ button to trigger the upload. The processing of the project for export might take a few minutes depending on the size of your project.

Please note that any updates or changes in the Revit project will not be transferred to your just created HoloBuilder project. If you click again on ‘Start Holo Generation’ for this project, a new HoloBuilder project will be created. No updates will be transferred to the previous HoloBuilder project.


When the project was successfully exported, a popup appears to sign into your HoloBuilder account (see left image below). When logged in, the project will be uploaded to your HoloBuilder account. The upload might take a few minutes depending on the size of your project (see right image below).

The finished HoloBuilder project will be opened in your browser after the upload is done.


3 Edit the project

A Revit export project can be edited as any other project in HoloBuilder with both, the web editor as well as the JobWalk app. Simply log into your HoloBuilder account to access the project on the web or download it to your mobile device to continue capturing progress with the JobWalk app.


4 View the HoloBuilder project

Once the upload of the exported Revit project was completed, the project will automatically open in a new browser tab. View and navigate the project through the waypoints on the sheets or the Project Panel on the left side of the screen.

Once you have added TimeTravel scene, you can also use SplitScreen to compare your 360° rendering from Revit with the real-life captures of the site.
